Swim Lessons!

States and I have added another weekly activity to our schedule! We are taking swim lessons at a local swim school. We started this last Wednesday! I was a little nervous that he wouldn't like them and would scream and cry. Boy was I wrong! States is a natural born fish. He smiled from the time we got into the pool until we got out. I think it helped that the pool water was 82 degrees. States also thought it was funny that his Momma's hair turned a shade of celery green from the experience :)

Bath Time

Well it's a new month (actually we are more than halfway through a new month)!!! States and I have been having a blast! He turned 6 months old on Feb. 13th. We went to the doctor to have his checkup. He weighs 19 1/2 pounds (yes...that is big for his age) and is 26 5/8 inches long. The doctor said that he could start having solids and that it was now time to move him into his own room at night. We haven't started the solids yet, but Chris, the wonderful father that he is, began States' transition into his new room. It was too hard for me to listen to States crying. Last night was the first night that States slept in his crib and did not get up for a nighttime feeding. YEAH!

It has been a very long time since our last post, so I'm sure many of you gave up on checking for new pictures and updates. Since our last post we have closed on our house and as of last week finished unpacking everything!!! We got a lot of help from our family, so a big thanks to all of you who helped with moving, packing, watching States, putting up wainscoting (Thanks David), all of the other fun stuff of moving into a new home. Our house is in Cedar Park, TX which is about 10-15 minutes from downtown Austin, 10 minutes from Lake Travis, and close to Chris' job. The house is in a community with a lot of young families and backs up to a huge city park with running/biking trails, rock climbing walls, swing sets, and a huge pool with water slides and a kiddie play area! We love the community and the surrounding area.

States is now 5 months old and approximately 20 lbs. He is wearing up to 12 month old clothes, so he's growing fast! He is sitting up pretty well and rolling over constantly. He is full of smiles and laughs at all times! Alisa is loving her new job as a stay-at-home Mom and looks forward to spending time this summer at the pool with States!

We will post some photos of the house next time, but for now here are some recent ones of States!

Well it has been over a month since our last post, so I’m sure most of you had given up on us ever posting anything new. Since our arrival to Austin we have been very busy with taking care of States and looking for a new home in the Austin area. Every spare moment we have been out with our real estate agent looking for the perfect house and as of this last week….we found it! We don’t close on it until November 27, so we will post some photos of the house at a later date.

States has been growing rapidly since his birth. He is now 2 months old and weights 14 pounds 8 ounces. States and Alisa have been spending lots of quality time together during the day and Chris gets his time in the evenings and weekends. States got to go on his first trip to Oklahoma and meet his great grandparents, Nana and Papa, his second cousin Beth and his third cousins Garrett and Raymond. He also got to meet his Uncle DJ, Aunt Shawna, and cousin Ryan. His final visit was from his great Aunt Susie and second cousins Cory and Christy. It was a great weekend full of photos…as usual!

Our parents have each made trips to Austin to see States and of course us too! Once we have our own place, we hope to have plenty more visits from friends and family.

States Christopher Beck

States Christopher Beck was born on August 13, 2006 at 9 pounds 10 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long. Since his birth a lot has been going on in our lives, which is the reason for the very late post on our blog. We sold our house in West Palm Beach, packed up all our stuff in a 26' truck with the help of our families and drove to Austin, Texas with States, Okie, Oreo and family in tow. It was a very challenging trip, but we made it. We are in Austin now temporarily living with Tori and Steve and Chris has started his new job with Concordia University. States is doing great! We will try to keep posting more often now that things are starting to settle down!

Alisa, Susie and I went for her appointment that she goes to twice a week at the hospital for a Stress Test which monitors States' heart rate and Alisa's contractions. She also had an ultrasound today to measure his estimated size and date. He is definitely going to be a big boy! Alisa is 38 weeks 2 days pregnant and the docs think she will deliver any day now. We'll keep you posted!

It has been a long time since we've posted, but for good reason. Around three weeks ago Alisa started having contractions coming 1-2 minutes apart. We checked into the hospital for our first overnight stay. We thought that States was ready to come, but after many hours of monitoring the docs determined that Alisa was dehyrdrated which led to the contractions. Then on last Saturday Susie was in Florida on her last day of a visit. We were getting ready to take her to the airport when the contractions and sharp abdominal pains started......so off to the hospital we went. They admitted us for a 23 hour observation to watch States' heart rate and Alisa's contractions. By the next morning everything was back to normal and our doctor released us.

Since it seems that States might not cooperate with his due date Susie has become a temporary Floridian. She is really helping out big time around the house and will stay here until States arrives. She found a local yoga studio to hang out with some Floridian yogis and really loves spending time on our new screened patio! If we get to used to all the extra help around here, we might not let her go!

Alisa is now 32 weeks pregnant and running out of room for States. He is letting her know it everyday with numerous kicks and punches to her belly. She has also been experiencing his hiccups about 3-4 times per day. We found out on last Thursday the reason why States is running out of room....he's going to be a BIG BOY. Our doctor expects him to be at least an 8 pounder. Our due date is still August 16, but our doctor said he could come earlier. Here are a few photos of Alisa and the big boy!!!

Aunt Loreta was very generous and gave us money to purchase a teddy bear for States. We decided it would be very special for his first teddy bear to be made by us. Here are some photos of our visit to the Build-a-Bear Workshop!

First, we had to pick which bear would be perfect for States. We chose a traditional teddy bear.

My fourth grade students were great this year! They were very helpful and supportive during my pregnancy. They would pass out and collect papers, run many errands for me, and most of all they were always good when Mrs. Beck had to leave (ok...run) out of the classroom for one of my many bathroom breaks. The students also gave lots of advice about babies, since most of them come from large families, and they volunteered their names for the baby. The sweetest thing that they did for me was my surprise baby shower. They organized a party for the last week of school and showered me with tons of baby gifts. It was a wonderful memory that I will always cherish.

You might be asking yourself how did they come up with the name States. Is it because Alisa and I met at Oklahoma State? Is it because of United States? Is it something they came up with on their own? All of those are good guesses, but none of them are correct. The name States actually came from a former board member, States Hines, at the American Red Cross Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter. I have seen his name on various Red Cross materials and always thought it was a cool name. When I told Alisa about it, she loved it from day one! She loved the uniqueness of the name and also that it had patriotic ties. The challenges that Alisa has experienced with her name is why we wanted to give States an original name, but also a name that everyone could spell and pronounce.

So there you have it....the story of States! We will keep you posted on the middle name once it is chosen.

A few Red Cross stories...

I have had the opportunity to do and see some really cool things while working for the Red Cross. Here is list of a few....

My first day of work for the Red Cross was back in August 2003 and Riviera Beach got hit with 3 tornados the previous day which was very rare for this area. I was immediately sent out on an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) to provide meals to the devastated areas. It was a great way for me to start my career off by seeing first hand what the Red Cross is all about.

I started with the Red Cross as an event planner, coordinating special events in the Palm Beaches. I had the opportunity to plan some parties in several multi million dollar homes, at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, and attend our International Ball at Mar-a-Lago. These events are like no other event I have been to in Oklahoma or anywhere else for that matter, but that is what Palm Beach is all about....charity events!

The next opportunity that I always remember is traveling over to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Charley to pickup some major donors ($1 million or more) and show them the devastation and work of the Red Cross. Meeting some of these donors and seeing where there money was being applied was a very moving experience. It helped me understand why fundraising is so important and why Red Cross is organization that is always necessary.

The next event that had the biggest impact in my Red Cross experiences was Hurricane Frances. Every staff member at my chapter is assigned to a Hurricane Shelter and must remain their before, during and after the storm. I am assigned to the Special Needs shelter (includes oxygen dependent patients, patients with caregivers, children with special needs, etc.) Hurricane Frances happen to come at the time of my parents vacation to Florida, so needless to say they became immediate Red Cross volunteers and signed up to come the shelter. As with every other hurricane Alisa came right along with me to volunteer. This hurricane was like no other because it took so long to finally hit Palm Beach County and pass out into the ocean. My shelter is usually the first to open and last to close, because the people in my shelter require electricity and food, therefore we have to get everyone into the shelter a day before landfall and we don't close until everyone has a source of power at their residence. Although Frances kept me and my family in the shelter for 8 straight days, I must say it was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. Not only did I get to spend some amazing times with my parents and Alisa, but I met some amazing people staying in the shelter (i.e. an original "Rockette", now in her 80's) I can't thank my family enough for their help, but I know they enjoyed it just as much as I did.

My final experience was just last week. I helped coordinate a luncheon to educate the local affluent Jewish community on our efforts with Magen David Adom (Red Cross in Israel). Ambassador Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Chairman of the Red Cross, was the keynote speaker. Meeting her alone was a very cool moment but that was just the beginning. After the luncheon I had the opportunity to go with Ambassador McElveen-Hunter and two other Red Crossers, and visit the "Hurricane Hunter" This is the plane that flies into hurricanes to research its strength among numerous other things. We were taken on a tour of the plane and showed all the bells and whistles. It is basically a research lab in the sky, but is was quite a thrill to see it in person. I never thought I would get to meet the Chairman of the Red Cross or see the "Hurricane Hunter", but both were very cool. Sorry for such a long post, but once I started thinking about my experience with Red Cross it just started flowing!

We spent the weekend fixing up our flower beds by adding a brick edge around the perimeter. Chris got to develop some masonry skills by chiseling one of the bricks to the appropriate size. Our next project is to add some potted plants to the front and add a patio screen enclosure to the back patio.

This one is difficult to tell, but it is of his heart. During the ultrasound we were able to actually see the heart beating and our doctor was able to measure the size and beats per minute. He was beating at a good rate 148 bpm....due to his constant activity. We think he's dancing...he must like Chris' hip hop.

Alisa and I spent a day at the beach. She is 18 weeks pregnant....as you can see the belly is growing! She still is rockin' the two piece and looking good!

Here is Alisa at 6 weeks. At this point she was feeling pretty good and able to eat all the typical things we would normally have. We didn't realize what was about to begin!

Here is Alisa at 16 weeks. There is a large gap in between photo updates because the last 10 weeks she has been experiencing the wonderful world of Reflux. In other words, she has not been able to keep much of anything down. We have found that she is able to eat Zone Bars and drink Gatorade, so we are stocked up on those items.

We have now announced our pregnancy to all of our friends, family and co-workers and everyone has been very excited and supportive. We hope that the second trimester will go smoother than the 1st. We will keep you posted!

Here we are at the best Luau in all of the Hawaiin Islands.....the Old Lahaina Luau. The food was incredible and the tropical drinks were always full. I can't say we like the Poi, but at least we tried it!
